The Interceding Prayer
By Jaren Vince Cruz
What is intercessory prayer? It is the act of praying with God on behalf of someone else. It is a selfless act and is considered by some people to be the highest form of prayer. There are many ways to love your neighbour but intercessory prayer has got to be one of the most powerful. 1 Timothy 2:1 “Pray for all people, asking God for what they need and being thankful to him.”
How to pray for others:
1) Pray that they know God’s will for their lives. (Col. 1:9) “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives you.”
2) Pray that they would do God’s will in their lives and pray for productivity in their lives. (Col. 1:10) “So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” *An obedient Christian has a fruitful life, this is God’s design for our lives.
3) Pray for them to have a growing relationship with God.
4) Pray for power in their lives. The power of the Holy Spirit can show strength in the face of problems, patience during testing and endurance to finish. Our source: JESUS.
5) Pray for them to have a right attitude. (Col 1:11-12) “Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.” *maintaining a joyful and positive attitude.
It changes the person and also you as you increase the time you spend in prayer:
-When you once focused on receiving, our concern has shifted to giving. (Acts 20:35)
-Where you once concerned with your injuries, your focus has changed to healing. (Col. 3:13)
-Where you once thought about problems, your focus is now God’s power. (Psalm t62:8)
Who listens when we pray? You can talk to God because God listens. Your voice matters in heaven. He takes you very seriously. When you enter His presence, He turns to you to hear your voice. No need to fear that you will be ignored. God listens intently and carefully.
Psalm 145: 18 “The Lord is close to everyone who prays to him, all who truly pray to him.”
God’s help is near and always available, but it is only given to those who seek it.
Psalm 34:17 “The Lord hears good people when they cry out to him, and he saves them from their troubles.”
Why do we pray? Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the ONE who hears it and not the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference. -Max Lucado
Prayers are precious jewels.
1 Peter 3:12 “The Lord sees the good people and listens to their prayers.” Your prayers are honored in heaven as precious jewels. Purified and empowered, the words rise in a delightful fragrance to our Lord. Your words do no stop until they reach the Throne of God. Your prayer on Earth activates God’s power in heaven, and “God’s will is done on earth as it is in Heaven. Your prayers move God to change the world. You may not understand the mystery of prayer. You don’t need to. But this much is clear:
Actions in Heaven begins when someone prays on Earth.
JESUS - intercessor
Jesus interceded for his disciples and the believers who would come after them including us!
John 17:9 “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, for they are yours.”
John 17:21 “That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
Jesus’ final prayer. Luke 22:41 “Then Jesus went about a stone’s throw away from them. He kneeled down and prayed.” The final prayer of Jesus was about you. His final pain was for you. His final passion was for you. Before he went to the cross, Jesus went to the garden. And when He spoke with His Father, you were in His prayers. And God couldn’t turn His back on you. He couldn’t because He saw you, and one look at you was all it took to convince Him. Right there in the middle of the world which isn’t fair. He saw you cast into a river of life you didn’t request. He saw you betrayed by those you love. He saw you with a body which gets sick and a heart which grows weak.
On the eve of the cross, Jesus made his decision. He would rather go to hell for you than go to Heaven without you.
